ROAD TO RIO+20

From June 4th to June 6th, Rio de Janeiro will host the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD or Rio +20) to mark the 20th anniversary of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED). Taking place twenty years after the first historic conference in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 and ten years after the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in Johannesburg, Rio+20 is a new attempt by the United Nations to reaffirm the commitment of states and the world community to sustainable development in the new millennium.

As a conference at the highest possible level, including Heads of States and Governments, UNCSD aims at laying down the foundation for a prosperous, peaceful and sustainable world. There are three topics on the agenda in addition to the two conference themes. The three topics are:
1. Strengthening the political commitments to sustainable development;
2. Reviewing the progress and difficulties associated with their implementation;
3. Responses to the new emerging challenges of societies.
The two official themes of Rio+20 are:
1.Green economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication;
2. The institutional framework for sustainable development.
The inaugural conference in Rio in 1992 addressed the fundamental challenges to sustainable development. This upcoming conference will address climate change, green economy, water scarcity, food security, population, institutional frameworks and other issues which require discussion and solutions on an international level. Therefore, Rio+20 will be a major milestone in the formation of the emerging global community. As a warm up to Rio+20, the International Mayor Communication Center (IMCC) and Chinese Society for Sustainable Development will hold the Global Mayors’ Forum (GMF) on 18-20 November 2011 in the city of Zhuhai, China.
