Centering Women in Reconstruction and Governance

Traditional lighting of the lamp at the Outcome Mapping Workshop
The goal of this project is to build capacity for grassroots women in two tsunami-affected Sri Lanka cities and their municipal governments through mobilizing local women to participate in decision making about their communities and reconstruction; training them in various livelihood skills; and building networks of women sharing their experiences in post-disaster reconstruction to improve community well-being.
Working in Moratuwa and Matara, the project is aimed at empowering women in their local communities and at the same time making local governance more effective Moratuwa and Matara.
One aspect of the project involves building Women's Community Resource Centres (CRCs). These are being designed through a participatory community design process and will serve as women run and managed safe places for community members to organize, exchange information, receive/provide livelihood training and education, particularly in areas such as urban greening that enhance the environment, offer services and sustain women's public participation through the project period and beyond. The CRC in Moratuwa will include a health clinic. By equipping women with income generation skills for livelihoods that enable them to sustain their families and communities and improve the environment, the partners are making a contribution far beyond the construction of physical buildings in tsunami affected cities.
The ICSC is leading the project in partnership with Sevanatha Urban Resource Centre, Grass Roots Organizations Operating Together in Sisterhood (GROOTS International) and Builders Without Borders Foundation (BWB).
