It is discovered that bacteria grow on the tiny particles of natural magnets. The bacteria are a mixed group that can “eat” and “breathe” the electrons out of metal.
In recent years, power generation bacteria have become a popular topic. Scientist discovered that some bacteria found at the sea and river bottom globally can get electrons from tiny metal particles. Iron particles have become an effective energy source, by devoting electrons to the bacteria. The other kinds of bacteria breathe effectively electrons by throwing unnecessary electrons to metal particles.
Up to now, James Byrne and his colleagues from in Tibingen University in Germany have found that a normal magnetic mineral, tiny magnet crystals can be the giver and accepter of electrons at the same time, thus it can work effectively as a battery. He let two groups of bacteria grow on the top of a magnet, and found that the first one can throw electrons to the crystals, but the latter receives electrons from the crystals.
Byrne introduced that these two reactions may happen according to day and night cycling or rising and falling tide timing under natural environment. Every bacteria are active at different time of the cycle. He said at the same time that the magnet crystals are like natural chargeable batteries to the bacteria group, that is one charges and the other consumes power.
Lars Peter Nielsen from Aohuth University in Denmark says, this discovery is exciting and it provides complete information that magnet as a mineral plays multiple roles about earth microbiology. A magnet can be used as a conductor or the storage box or source of electrons to meet the different needs of bacteria.
